Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
In rural areas such as Dambatta Local Government Area in Kano State, access to educational resources is often limited due to inadequate infrastructure, economic challenges, and geographic isolation. However, the rise of digital media platforms has created opportunities to overcome these barriers. Digital media, which includes online platforms, social media, and digital learning tools, has become an increasingly important tool for advancing literacy in underserved communities. By providing access to educational content, online tutorials, and interactive learning platforms, digital media plays a significant role in promoting literacy in rural areas. This study aims to explore how digital media is utilized in Dambatta to enhance literacy levels, focusing on the types of digital tools available, the level of engagement, and the overall impact on literacy improvement.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential of digital media to improve literacy, many rural communities in Dambatta face challenges in fully harnessing its capabilities due to issues such as low internet penetration, inadequate digital literacy, and limited resources for accessing digital devices. This study seeks to identify how digital media can be optimized to address these challenges and contribute to improving literacy in rural communities.
